The holidays are here… and so is the Holiday FOG — that sneaky mix of Fear, Obligation, and Guilt that can steal your joy before you even step into a room. The good news is that you absolutely can clear this FOG and it’s simple. Here are ways to reclaim your holiday— even when family dynamics get complicated.
- Pause–Observe what is happening and track the impact it is having on you.
- Protect Yourself–Slow your response time, ask for a bit of space, redirect attention to something else to buy some time. Then breathe.
- Ask for Help–Engage support. Reach out to someone who can be a sounding board if you are spiraling into self-doubt. Align with a family member who struggles less within these dynamics.
- Set Boundaries–Communicate clearly with boundary setting language. “These are our options.” “This is what I can do and what I can’t do.” “This won’t work for me.” “Let’s revisit this at a later time.”
You don’t have to absorb other people’s anxiety
You don’t have to perform
You don’t have to sacrifice your peace for someone else’s comfort.
Holiday connection should feel grounded, warm, and mutual — not pressure ridden or guilt-driven. So if you’re feeling the FOG creeping in… take a breath, self protect, set some limits, ask for help. Disrupt the old family patterns and choose a new way. Remember that you’re allowed to set limits, use prepared, empowered language, and choose yourself.
Your “yes” can be heartfelt.
Your “no” can be peaceful.
And your holidays can be yours again.
